Bridport is a vibrant
and colourful town set amongst the West Dorset hills. Dating from
the 9th or 10th century, it stands where the rivers Brit and Asker
meet. By the early 13th century Bridport had become the country’s
most important ropemaking centre. This was followed by netmaking
and it was upon these two industries that the town’s fame
and fortune was built. Today, Bridport is one of West Dorset’s
most welcoming towns and the ideal place to browse and shop!
One mile south of the town is West Bay, a busy harbour village
with characteristic kiosks, fishing boats, pubs and restaurants
all nestled between the spectacular East and West Cliffs.
Together, Bridport and West Bay make an ideal centre for strollers,
hikers, shoppers, swimmers, fishermen and all who come to enjoy
the varied and beautiful West Dorset coastline. The views across
Lyme Bay from the coastal path are particularly inspiring –
to the west, Golden Cap (goal of many enthusiastic walker) with
the fossil rich cliffs of the Jurassic coast slipping slowly to
the shore. To the east begins the great shingle curve of Chesil
Bank with its magnificent lagoon.
